Competition District Square Riem Munich

text

The new public square of the district should and must offer future users a variety of options. At the same time, an identity-generating effect should be achieved by a distinct design in this culturally heterogeneous area of Munich.

From an urban standpoint, the site is located in an urban centre at the intersection of the green north-south axis and the Willy Brandt Allee. It is a connection between underground train station and the recreational area to the south of the site, particularly the lake Riemer See. Locally, the square is designed to invite people living in the area out of their dwellings. It welcomes participation in public life and the development of public space.

The carpet symbolises the idea of a living room while fulfilling a spatial function. Carpets date back to the beginning of human social life. They are an expression of cultural identity and social diversity, ranging from bedside carpets, rag rugs, and runners to oriental carpets and prayer rugs. Carpets create zones, places with a specific character and relationship; they set spatial standards from large to intimate and impart significance to formal and informal places. The carpet identifies special places in the square. It attracts attention, invites visitors to stay and slows down the flow of movement in the public urban space.
